So You Don’t Run Out Of Things To Worry About

The title “So You Don’t Run Out Of Things To Worry About” is lifted from the great Paul Harvey.  He uses it to announce the latest scare about a product, service, country or ideal.

Well, now the spirit and intention of that phrase seems to saturate every facet of American life to include all of media, our own back yards and even the grocery store shelves.

We just ended the great Tomato scare of 2008 where some 280 people became sick with salmonella after eating regular red, round tomatoes.  Whew, that’s over for the most part!  Maybe Bubba forgot to wash out the pig truck before borrowing it from Roscoe to deliver his t’mAters.

Now on to (or back to) the regular new list of scares:
…and toping that list is PLASTIC!

Have you noticed those recycle numbers on the bottom of your bowl (plate, cup, water bottle, lotion, keyboard, mouthwash, orange juice)?  Well, those Resin Identification Codes (RICs) now tell us what can be recycled together.  Others have read those codes as potential health risks.  Click on the chart below to see the issue:

Resin Identification Codes

So NOW what?

One of the concerns is the health risk associated to these when they are exposed to excessive moisture!

My new coffee cupDoes that include hot coffee in my new Starbucks Coffee Mug (RIC=7) !!!
Surely Styrene Acrilo Nitrile can’t be a health risk, CAN IT???
It’s NEW, so it’s SAFE, right?

How about (other supposed bad things) … or are they good?:

  • Multi-tasking is bad, but keeping your brain active is good
  • Lemons in your water
  • Deodorant (with aluminum) / and even Hyperhidrosis
  • Trans Fat /  and even Fat Free diets
  • Bluetooth Headsets / and even Wired Headsets
  • Cell phones (is this scare gone???)
  • Asbestos (What about brakes???)
  • Bottled Water / and even Tap water
  • Using plastic is bad, but REusing plastic is good
  • Dehydration / and even too much water
  • Air conditioning
  • Artificial Sweetner / and even Sugar
  • Global Warming / and even Global Cooling
  • Satanists / and even Priests
  • Muslims / and even Christians
  • Staying indoors / and even going outside
  • Buying too much Gasoline / and even cutting
back on Gasoline increases the price
  • Same source for fuel or food (corn) increases the price
  • Supply and Demand / and even Scarcity
  • The previous administration / and even the next administration
  • Eating fish is healty, but can cause mercury poisoning
  • Obese children / but sports activities are reduced in schools
  • No child left behind / and even ANY child left behind
  • Alcohol is good / Alcohol is bad
  • Coffee is good / Coffee is bad

George Jetson Floppy DiskIn 1992, the wars started that caused Khan Noonien Singh to rise to power (Star Trek).

In 1997, the crew of of the spaceship Jupiter II, on their way to Alpha Centauri, got “LOST IN SPACE“.

In 1999, the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha were sent hurtling through space based because the moon was knocked out of its orbit (Space: 1999).

…and what year was that Space Odyssey???

Don’t forget, 2010 is the year we make contact.

All of that is to draw attention to the fact that we’re not keeping up with our own imaginations.  If we were, I’d have a HOVER CRAFT by now and I would be wearing some type of a shiny-material jumpsuit with no need for money or pockets.

The microwave is no substitute for the food replicator.  The elevator is a lame version of a transporter.  Push To Talk, however, seems to be very close to the “communicator”, but will only work in certain areas (…and just on planet Earth).

Is it our own self-doubt that keeps us using fossil fuels and using media that spins!?!?!
Check out that 8″ floppy in George Jetson’s hand.  Are we going to continue to fall short of our imaginative potential in the future?

    None of the Above

    None Of The Aboe

Never has there been a better time for the choice of None Of The Above.  How in the world do we make a decision about a left-leaning Republican, a left-leaning Democrat and an ultra-left-leaning Democrat?

The latter, Obama, talks of “change”.  Well, we’re gonna get change no matter what.  Most of that change might be in the mind and heart of the next president, however.  How can someone take over given the current conditions (good or bad) and make the RIGHT change?  John plans to vere left while Hillary plans to turn-left and blame-right.  As for Barack, he plans to FALL left, which will either be the most brilliant strategy or the greatest mistake — kinda like our current situation with George.

As for George, the jury is still out.  Will the history books show all of this turmoil as a great vision carried out by a man who had to live out his vision despite the ridicule of most of America or will he go down in history as the worst ever?

Who would want to be president, anyway?

    Now, back to the topic:

We need a fresh, new batch of candidates that REALLY WANT TO HELP AMERICA (or at least one).  The current batch just want “the office” and the in-fighting from the Democrats goes to show us they’re truly the house divided against itself.

Soon, we’ll get to see how Barack and his running mate team up to fight John while John has been sitting back collecting ammunition.

Is he too old for the fight?

Let’s just start over.  EVERYBODY BACK IN THE RING!!!

    Today, I Feel Old

    Charlton Heston

OK.  Today, I feel old.  Moses is dead.

Who hasn’t seen the Ten Commandments movie?

I’ve been watching this man all of my life and indeed just (bought and) watched the movie The Omega Man within the last couple of weeks.  I frequently watch selections from the Planet of the Apes series and have always respected Mr. Heston’s talent and even his political views.

Every time someone like this dies, I feel the RATCHET of life pushing me one step closer.  I hear the mechanism click, but never hear it unclick.

Now that it has been 40 years since the assassination of Martin Luther King (MLK) (and I’m not making light of this issue based on its location in this posting), I realize how fast that life ratchet moves and how many clicks go by that we don’t even notice.

I remember we were in Atlanta during the funeral.  I remember my father going out to the celebration.

MLK was 39 when he gave the “I Have a Dream” speech.  I would have been NOWHERE NEAR READY for something like that when I was 39.

I’m now older than Hendrix (27), John Belushi (33), ODB (35),  Stevie Ray Vaughan (35), Anna Nicole (39), Malcom X (39), MLK (39), Edgar Allan Poe (40), Elvis (42), Reggie White (43), Steve Irwin (44)
     and Jesus (on Earth) (33).

May we all live to be as old as Moses.

    Goodbye, Mr. Heston.
